The lioness was separated from the herd and lost in a large herd of wild buffalo near a lagoon in Kruger National Park, South Africa. The survival instinct urged the buffalo to rush to the rock. They began attacking the lioness with their sharp horns in the presence of tourist Danica Roux and her family on December 12.
Dust billowed up while wild buffaloes trampled their enemies. The lioness disappeared from sight for a moment before suddenly reappearing. It tried to climb onto the back of a buffalo but was lifted up by the buffalo using its horns. Then, the lioness was thrown to the ground. The herd of buffalo hovering around obscured it. Finally, they threw the lion’s carcass high and continued to push the body into the water.
“We were about to leave when we heard a commotion coming from the buffalo herd. Right after that, I saw the lioness being chased. She was caught in the middle of the overwhelming herd of buffalo. All of us. were shocked and felt quite sad for him,” Roux said.
Lions often hunt in packs when dealing with large mammals such as buffalo, zebra, and antelope. They also mainly choose vulnerable prey instead of running straight into the middle of the buffalo herd like the ill-fated lioness above.
The African buffalo, also known as the Cape buffalo, is one of the Big Five, along with the lion, leopard, rhinoceros and elephant. This buffalo can weigh 1,000 kg. Buffalo is widely distributed in eastern and southern Africa and is not an endangered species.
