A team of scientists, led by Henri Weimerskirch from the French National Center for Scientific and Biological Research, has revealed a unique discovery about the Frigate bird.

The study, published in the journal Science, revealed that the birds are capable of soaring continuously in the air for 56 days without resting.

By attaching GPS trackers to the birds from 2011 to 2015, the team found that Frigate birds can fly for up to 56 days straight, traveling hundreds of miles per day, and reaching altitudes of 2.5 miles.

The trackers attached to the birds weigh just 10 grams and are solar-powered, monitoring heart rate, GPS, and acceleration without interfering with the bird’s natural movements.

It is found that one hemisphere of the bird’s brain rarely rests. We already know that dolphins can swim while looking for danger.

The data logger showed that birds often use the hemisphere of the brain that is connected to the eyes. This means that while sleeping, they can still see their surroundings.

Surprisingly, the data logger also showed that both hemispheres of the brain slowly fall asleep at the same time while the birds can still fly. Birds can even sleep in the air, making strange sounds and relaxing their muscles like mammals.

In addition to their impressive flying ability, Frigates are also known as great predators because no fish can escape their claws once they have identified their target.

Frigates also have the habit of stealing prey right from the mouths of other birds, so they are also called “hijackers”.

Frigates stand out with their large bright red kites. With their flying skills, Frigates can “travel” throughout the Indian Ocean.
