Wildlife photographer Robert Ruiz hid for four hours in freezing temperatures to capture rare footage of a cougar chasing and killing a guanaco this past July.

On September 8, the @natureismetal account posted this clip on their famous Instagram page and it has attracted more than 120,000 likes.

The video begins with a cougar bursting out from behind a bush as a herd of guanacos walk ahead of it in a snow-covered landscape. For a moment, it looked like the guanaco might be able to withstand the puma’s explosive attack. It struggled violently, causing the cougar to soar into the air. But the predator never gave up holding on to the guanaco’s neck. After a while, the guanaco camel was also defeated.

The Guanaco camel belongs to the wild llama family that lives mainly in South America. Camels are only 1-1.4 m tall but have a weight of up to 90-140 kg. Large in size and gentle, Guanaco camels are potential prey for South American carnivores.

One of the top threats to Guanaco camels is pumas, also known as mountain lions, they live alone and specialize in choosing large prey to hunt down. Due to the difference in body size, predators often attack at critical points to quickly knock down and destroy their prey. Usually cougars will aim for the target’s neck.
