Kruger National Park in northeastern South Africa is one of Africa’s largest nature reserves. This is where 5 species of wildlife gather in the greatest number, including lions, jaguars, rhinos, elephants and wild buffalo.

In the recorded clip, the sick hippo mother is lying on the sand at the edge of the river. A lion saw it approaching. Instead of running away, the baby hippo bravely rushed to chase the lion, not allowing it to come near its mother.

But the hippo getting lost in the mud, unable to get out is considered an opportunity not to be missed for lions. The lion tried to attack several times, but was chased away by the baby hippo.

Sadly, this scene did not have a happy ending. The mother hippo died not long after the photos were taken. The baby hippo was too young to take care of itself, so it died two days later.
